Adeeb… you are in focus … But the hope-gate is wide…. Be optimistic! You will be Okay! Adeeb, be silent! Pay attention! Concentrate! Be quiet! Sit in your seat! Don't leave your seat! Adeeb! Don't answer before you are asked! Don't reply before I finish my question! Don't interrupt others! Complete your work! Don't annoy your colleagues! Don't hit your brother, nor your sister, Otherwise, I'll …..! These requests are frequently asked at home, in school but Adeeb doesn't listen, nor does he respond to them, he is in a valley and others are in another one. He is on the go as if he is driven by a motor, he runs, climbs, Jumps, rolls over, hits one boy and kicks the other. He talks excessively, interrupts others and intrudes on them, so he is abandoned by others, and lives alone. He is upset because they deserted him, he complains that he has few friends and others do not understand him. In the classroom, he fights with hands or feet, or squirms in his seat, he leaves his seat and runs about the other seats. Suddenly, a teacher enters into the classroom, starts a lesson demonstration, and Adeeb hears voices come out of the teacher's mouth, but he is not aware of the teacher's talk, nor does he pay attention to his demonstration because he is involved in stinging the child next to him, and pulling the hair of another peer who sits in front of him. Once they triggered screams of pain, he pretends that he knows nothing about what has just happened! The teacher threatens him, and Adeeb swears assertively that he will not repeat his bad doing, but it is just a few moment befor he resumes his teasings and troubling, the teacher's patience runs out and hence punishment is unavoidable and inevitable, he is punished. The teacher continues the demonstration of the lesson, but at this moment, Adeeb hears a sound of a car horn in the neighbouring street, and suddenly rushed into the window to look at the car, ignoring the teacher and breaking off his vows. The teacher poses a question on the content of the lesson he has just explained, and before he finishes his question, Adeeb immediately answers….but how strange the answer was! It has no relationship with the question! So the students laugh. As a result, the teacher roars with strong threats. The recess bell rings, and the students leave their classrooms in order, for the courtyard, and some of them go to the cafeteria except Adeeb who thrusts quickly, bumping against this pupil, removing by his hands those who are blocking his way, then heading towards the court, wondering around it several times, then turning to the cafeteria where he finds a long queue, but he ignores that queue and dislodging who has the turn, causing a condemnation and quarrel. The teacher who is in charge of order interferes and ends the clash, asking him to leave the place! So he goes to the yard …and there he views some students whom he is not acquainted with because they are from another classroom, they talk quietly and suddenly he intrudes on them and interrupts them, but they rebuke him and a battle breaks out, he runs away to another corner, snatching a sandwich from a small child. The small child and some other students chase him, and the teachers burst into the scene to explore the issue, and it is Adeeb! Adeeb … the trouble-maker! After a few hours, Adeeb goes back to his home. He jumps out from the bus rapidly toward his house. He knocks at the door with his hands, kicks it with his feet, and then rings the house bell, and press it continuously, his mother goes out scared and astonished! What about you Adeeb? His mother says. He replies with loud sound and screaming: Why were you late in opening the door? Then, he bursts into the house quickly, throws his school bag away, opens the refrigerator strongly, he wants to drink water and pouring out water on his clothes. His mother asks him to change his wet clothes, but he procrastinates and postpones until he finishes his desired tasks. He runs, rolls up, kicks a ball and his mother shouts upon him and runs after him. He runs away to the sleeping room and starts jumping on the bed making it messy, his mother screams, threatens but he escalates his deeds, ignoring his mothers threats until his father comes and punishes him. In the evening, his mother's suffering continues, during teaching him or helping him in doing homework. She asks him to bring his books in order to teach him. She keeps asking and he keeps delaying, but she seats him by force, asks him about what was taught in school, and he claims that nothing new was taught to him, and he has no homework. She contacts her neighbour's son who is a peer in his classroom, and he provides her with contradictory information. She starts teaching him, explains, demonstrates but he is absent-minded. His mother decides to consult school about her concerns, hopefully, she can find a help that alleviate her suffering, she meets the principal and there she hears about him more than what she experiences at home! So, what must be done for him? The school principal decides to hold a meeting to discuss Adeeb's case with his parents, his teachers and the counselor, but the meeting ends up with recommendations and an Individual Behaviour Plan to be executed by his teachers and the counsellor, and some of its procedures are followed-up by parents at home. Several months have passed, some undesirable behaviors disappeared, and some of them decreased, but other behaviors that affect his academic achievement and social adjustment have remained. Another meeting has been convened for progress evaluation. The counselor advises his parent to take him to a psychiatrist. His parents are shocked when hearing such a suggestion!! Why he should be referred to a psychiatrist? What can a psychiatrist do? The counsellor replies: your son Adeeb suffers from "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" which is a psycho-neurological disorder. His parent says together with great astonishment: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? Is it a desease? Does our son need a drug to get rid of it? The world of ADHD is confusing and overwhelming. From the moment you suspect your child has ADHD, you begin a journey that seems to have no road map. Once your child is diagnosed, the destination becomes even less clear. • Does your child need to be tested? • Should you try medication? • Does your child receive special education? • Will your child fail in school? • Can your son join a university? • Will he/she find a job after his graduation? The List of question goes on repeatedly, but the answers to them are not easy … and wherever you go for help, you are often told that medication is the answer! Teachers tell you "medication is the sole solution"! Other parents tell you that medication is not the remedy! Certainly, you will become perplexed and at a loss. In fact, medication is not the answer. Moreover, it is very controversial. Apart from its wide range of detrimental side-effects, not all ADHD Children respond to medication. So, most professionals and parents resort to the Triad Intervention for ADHD: Behavioral, Educational and Home based intervention. They consider it the safest and the most effective intervention.
